There’s the first of the calendar year and then, the beginning of the school year. For so many years, being a student, being the parent of students, and then being an educator, this is the beginning that registers. There’s that freshness and newness, the stacks of blank notebooks to be filled with new concepts. An imperative to turn over a new leaf and set goals. And it’s the Jewish New Year with an invitation to unload some personal debris/regrets into a brook like dust from one’s pockets. And a double purpose for new school clothes as well as fresh duds for the High Holidays. At least, that featured in my childhood. The fallen dried leaves underfoot and under my bike tires is the audible punctuation mark that I never tire of.

For us in the Sierra Nevada foothills, the cooling temperatures means that we're not staying inside during really hot afternoons. It also means that the rains will soon begin putting an end to wildfire season, which is always most welcome as we relax away from being on alert. For that reason, it certainly is a fresh turning!

Fall feels like a time of year to renew and refresh after the busy summer. The beauty of this time of year is incredible. Each year we do a fall drive to witness the spendor of the beautiful trees and the beauty that surrounds us. Fully enjoy this time of year!!
