FRIEND
Gabby Wenzel
He waits by the door
when I come to school.
At recess, he waits for me
on the playground
with a smile.
He always tells me yes
and I try to always tell
him yes, too.
Isn’t that what friends do?
With other friends, it starts
out well but sometimes
it doesn’t end well.
With him, it always ends well.
Sometimes I think we are
the moon holding up the
sky, even when there are no stars.
Curator's note: At the time of publication, the poet was seven years old. When asked why she liked to write poetry, she replied, “In a poem, I can run without legs and be in the sunshine under the clouds. My imagination does the thinking and my hand does the writing. It’s so fun!”
(My thanks to Gabby Wenzel, via Rattle and Rafter .)

YES! Such wise words from a brilliant philosopher and poet. Cheers to the friendships that end well!
These posts and poems keep me going especially this past week. As I sit watching my mom fight for her life, they give me hope and something to wrap my brain around as I deal with all these emergencies and emergent realities. It's such a balm to my soul. Thank you!
