As a conscientious objector in the Vietnam war era, Iโve learned to honor the warrior in those who served. Iโve also learned that the warrior archetype can be put into service without wearing a uniform or carrying a gun. I do use weapons, like the mattock I apply to invasive plants.
As a veteran, I plan on having this played at my eventual funeral. Despite being in the military, I find the reasons we fight tend to be economic, not survival. I will also play War Pigs by Black Sabbath; the politicians start the wars,, then send the young to die.

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, uhh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all
War, huh (good God)
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me, oh (Edwin Starr)

Yes to all of this, from my point of view. Thank you for adding these counterpoints, which really aren't "counter" to the lyrics at all.
Oh how foolish we can be....
I only knew the Baez version- this one is fabulous and deep, so timely. When will poetry and music like this no longer be timely?
Never, I suspect.

"Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah"
Thank you for your perspective as a veteran, Doye. That point you make about the reasons we fight is THE point, for me.
