This January,
over at sent a postcard-essay to his “younger artist self” from the vantage point of his fifty-four years.Ben’s bits of advice are worthy of our reflection, whether or not we consider ourselves “artists.” (As I’ve so often said, all of us are creative. That’s part of my definition of being human.)
Maybe Ben’s tidbits will inspire some thoughts of your own . . .
You might be unique, but you’re not special.
No one is watching you so stop performing.
You’ll never measure up so put away the ruler.
You must know what you want to get it.
Kindness improves everything, always.
Just because you feel it doesn’t mean it’s real.
“Pay attention.” There’s a reason that phrase is a transaction. It costs something.
If you’re not moved by what you make, stop.
It’s okay to quit but not to give up.
Everyone is scared. It’s okay to be scared.
What bit of wisdom would you like to share with your “younger creative self”?
Or, maybe, what would you like to say to your “older creative self” . . . ?

I have no advice for my younger self. I probably wouldn’t have listened anyway. 😁
It's not about you have lost, but what you have left.
