When the Snow Geese Rise by Carol Mikoda

When the snow geese rise

in parallel lines

from marsh and stubble’s texture

into gray flannel clouds,

their flight paths

crosshatch the slant

they cry, insistent

rising notes matching altitude.

Corn carries them south

as fields release

the last of their riches.
