Welcome to the April Dig
In case you’re new here, let me remind you that the Dig is a monthly set of writing prompts to help you “dig” deeper into the current of your own creativity and benefit from its flow.
Respond to one or more of these prompts in whatever form tickles your fancy—journaling, poem, story, essay . . . the possibilities are endless.
Be playful with the prompt . . . or serious . . . or seriously playful. Practice old ways of writing, or try a fresh new approach. Write alone, or with a friend.
Most of all, write for yourself. Write what you enjoy, even if it’s occasionally difficult. Write what’s true—in the soul sense.
#1: A one-word writing prompt
Write anything in response to this word: SKEIN.
Did you know . . . this word is most associated with a length of wool or yarn. Its origins are Old French. But it has other, related meanings. Consider, for example:
anything wound in or resembling a coil of wool or yarn, such as a skein of hair, or a twisted skein of words
a flock of birds in flight
#2: Start here.
Use this phrase as a starting point: “I have to tell you this:”
These words are from the opening line of Philip Appelman’s poem entitled “Last-Minute Message for a Time Capsule”: “I have to tell you this, whoever you are.”
#3: Write about a fear you had as a child.
Write from your perspective as a child. Or from the age you are now.
Or write from the perspective of the fear.

I have to tell you this, whoever you are, that Michael, my one and only child, gave up his own life twelve years ago.
I have to tell you this, who ever you are, so I can assure myself he did live while the world goes on unable to remember. I have to tell you this, whoever you are, so in the telling I can go on living through this day.
A skein of yarn gets my Joy meter running like a quarter turns on a parking meter. It gets me to working my creative magic and before I know it, I have run out of time! So I return to that same meter each day and make my deposit, until the skeins become a finished product. 😊
