The last two lines, Phyllis, are especially powerful. I was glad to see this poem. I've been looking at some paintings lately by Georges de la Tour and Joseph Wright who experimented with the effects of candlelight. Chiaroscuro. I asked myself, what do I want to take away from the juxtaposition of darkness and light. Thank you!
No, not a painter but a poet who is very much interested in ekphrastic poetry. The Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets has an annual WI Poets' Calendar and the theme for 2025 is "Shine."

Wonderful! I'm especially touched by the lines:
"What does it matter
in this deep night
how that wee light
came to be there..."
Lovely poem!
Those lines sang for me too. ❤️
Thank you, Brigid! (I like the notion of lines "singing"!)
Thank you, Jan! May much light be in your field of vision!
Lovely, thank you for the light!
Danke, Almut! Keep shining!
Oh! I remember when you wrote this! What a joy to see it here! Love love love to you and I celebrate the light you bring
😊 Thanks to you! Your invitation gave me a start on this one, and I'm grateful for your light-bringing! ❤️
We light up the world with Love ❤️
Love your create, Phyllis 🙏
Thank you, Mish—especially for YOUR light!
Beautiful Phyllis, just as it is!
"What the light means
is what you will do."
We are not in control- mystery is.
THAT!
You have what's needed to go on.
These words help me say, AH!
Thank you for your creative co-creation. An exquisite gift.
Every "Ah!" joins body, mind, and spirit in a great release! Doesn't it feel good? ❤️
First thing that came to my mind is how, when I really relax into meditation, I frequently see flickering light. This I know is the Light of God.
Beautiful. And that light is still there when you leave your cushion . . .
“or maybe to let you know
you have what's needed to go on.”
Love that!
And you have it, Kate!
Grateful for flickering lights that keep hope alive. Thanks for letting your light shine Phyllis!
Thank YOU, Myrtle. Everywhere, the flickers . . .

Love this synchronicity, Ronnie! I'll have to look up Georges de la Tour and Joseph Wright. Are you a painter yourself?

Best wishes for your "Shine" writing, Ronnie!
I was once an X-ray technologist by trade and loved a high contrast radiograph. I find, too, that I am drawn to black and white photography.
...juxtaposition of light and dark! Yes. I will check out those paintings. Thanks.
Nice! Love the gifts of this poem.
"or if it were lit
for the sake of you". 💝

Just read this aloud. What does it matter, indeed.
Thank you for reading it aloud, Jane. Can TOTALLY change our experience of a poem. The voice becomes another crack to let the light in (and out).
Thank you Phyllis. Love poems about ‘the light’
Big smile, Jennie!
