Welcome to “Honeymoon with Big Joy”
Remember, you’re the co-creator of this dive. Do as much or as little as you’d like, when you’d like, how you’d like, with the materials I provide. Just keep gentle faith with yourself.
Set your intention
Take a moment to name the primary intention you have for this month-long deep dive and/or this particular session. Take a quiet moment to center yourself in that intention.
En-JOY the music
Read the poem
I invite you to read this poem twice—aloud, at least once. You may also listen to my reading of the poem, perhaps with your eyes closed.
EASTER EXULTET James Broughton Shake out your qualms. Shake up your dreams. Deepen your roots. Extend your branches. Trust deep water and head for the open, even if your vision shipwrecks you. Quit your addiction to sneer and complain. Open a lookout. Dance on a brink. Run with your wildfire. You are closer to glory leaping an abyss than upholstering a rut. Not dawdling. Not doubting. Intrepid all the way Walk toward clarity. At every crossroad Be prepared to bump into wonder. Only love prevails. En route to disaster insist on canticles. Lift your ineffable out of the mundane. Nothing perishes; nothing survives; everything transforms! Honeymoon with Big Joy! (from Little Sermons of the Big Joy)
Contemplate/Create
Use any of these questions however you wish—e.g., as openings for meditation or prayer, as prompts for journaling or poetry-writing, as sparks for drawing or painting, as catalysts for change-making . . . You may also ignore my questions altogether to go off in other directions!
Pick a line (or two) in this poem that “shimmers” brightly for you, capturing your attention. Use it as an opening to reflect, write, or create.
What does “Honeymoon with Big Joy!” mean to you in this moment?
Which “doubts” sometimes obstruct your joy in life?

There is soooo much in this that just makes me joyful! The wit of this is so wonderful! But so much speaks to me - what a way to start. Thank you!
On route to disaster
Insist on Canticles!
Whether it's a disaster or not usually presents itself much later than when I am doing something - so the moral of the story is to always insist on canticles!
“You are closer to glory
leaping an abyss
than upholstering a rut.”
Okay, the image of upholstering a rut had me laughing out loud. We get sooo dedicated to our patterns, we might as well really settle in: upholster our ruts, put curtains on our windows of despair, and festoon our stubborn habits with glittering garlands (hot-glued firmly in place). Or not, of course.
