Netherlands-based artist Marija Tiurina likens the experience of working on murals to “the feeling of conquering a giant and befriending something way beyond your own size.”
In this post, I’m sharing two of my favorite Tiurina murals. The untitled one above—painted on the facade of a local community center in St. Malo, France—depicts a tall, flower getting some “TLC” (tender loving care).
“I wanted my piece to be full of warmth and cosiness,” the artist says, “as well as carry a surreal and whimsical vibe, as caring for yourself and others is a really magical act, and it can help the world heal.”
"Forward Together," shared below, is a 10-meter mural Tiurina created in Galicia, Spain. “I wanted to celebrate the community, people holding onto each other throughout the good times and the bad. With a booming refugee crisis, wars and economical storms forcing millions to leave their homes and start anew, it feels vital to hold onto each other as we're defo stronger together.”
Amen to that, sister.

I love love love the flower pot/person mural! Here's to tending to each other with care 💕
Beautiful! It's amazing how even the smallest act can communicate care to someone.
A story comes to mind. One day while on one of my daily walks, I passed a man on the street. I smiled at him as we passed and I continued walking. In a moment I heard, "Excuse me." I turned around. He thanked me for smiling at him. He told me that it had felt like a long time since he'd had a kind exchange. What he didn't know is that I smile at everyone I pass by. What he left me with is the understanding that even the smallest act can have the greatest impact.
