Coco Love Alcorn, the songwriter, said that she was inspired to write this song after meeting a water walker named LeeAnne Bewasaya Shawanabineshii Stevens.
LeeAnne spends 35 days every spring walking along or near the Bruce Trail, from Niagara Falls to Nochemowenaing (Hope Bay, Ontario). As she walks, she gathers and collects water from the creeks, streams, rivers and lakeshores, praying for the water and her community.
WATER PEOPLE
Coco Love Alcorn
I went down to the water
(I went down to the water)
And I met a water walker
(And I met a water walker)
She been walkin' for many a day
(She been walkin' for many a day)
It was down by the river that I heard her say
(down by the river, I heard her say)
What happens to the water
happens to the people . . .
'Cause we are water (we are water) people
I went down to the water
(I went down to the water)
And I met a water walker
(And I met a water walker)
She been walkin' for the sake of the earth
(Walkin' for the sake of the earth)
She been walkin' for she know its worth
(Walkin' for she know its worth) . . .

Thank you for this and also for introducing me to a new singer/songwriter. This song is so powerful...water is so powerful an element and Winter is the time for the water element. I did not know of this tradition of gathering the water. But I have dug and cleared springs with other women and sung while working. Birth water...daily life..this is a wonderful start to the day.
Very powerful, thank you!
