Little Amal is the 12-foot puppet of a 10 year old Syrian refugee. She has become a global symbol of compassion and human rights—specially those of refugees.
Since July 2021, Amal has travelled to 15 countries. In the United States, she walked through more than 40 cities. Most recently (November), she visited seven cities in Mexico, the first Latin American and Spanish-speaking country of her long journey.
Amal’s journeys are festivals of art and hope that draw attention to the huge numbers of children fleeing war, violence, and persecution. She carries a message of hope for displaced people everywhere. Her urgent message to the world is “Don’t forget about us.”
Little Amal was designed and built by Handspring Puppet Company. Her walk has brought together celebrated artists, major cultural institutions, grass-roots community groups, humanitarian organizations, and civic and religious leaders to achieve one of the more extensive, innovative, and adventurous public artworks ever attempted.
