Welcome to “Honeymoon with Big Joy”
Remember, you’re the co-creator of this dive. Do as much or as little as you’d like, when you’d like, how you’d like, with the materials I provide. Just keep gentle faith with yourself.
Set your intention
Take a moment to name the primary intention you have for this month-long deep dive and/or this particular session. Take a quiet moment to center yourself in that intention.
En-JOY the music
Read the poem
I invite you to read this poem twice—aloud, at least once. You may also listen to my reading, perhaps with your eyes closed.
RAPTURE Linda Hogan Who knows the mysteries of the poppies when you look across the red fields, or hear the sound of long thunder, then the saving rain. Everything beautiful, the solitude of the single body or sometimes, too, when the body is kissed on the lips or hands or eyelids tender. Oh for the pleasure of living in a body. It may be, it may one day be this is a world haunted by happiness, where people finally are loved in the light of leaves, the feel of bird wings passing by. Here it might be that no one wants power. They don't want more. And so they are in the forest, old trees, or those small but grand. And when you sleep, rapture, beauty, may seek you out. Listen. There is secret joy, sweet dreams you may never forget. How worthy the being in the human body. If, when you are there, you see women wading on the water and clouds in the valley, the smell of rain, or a lotus blossom rises out of round green leaves, remember there is always something besides our own misery. (from Rounding the Human Corners: Poems)
Contemplate/Create
Use any of these questions however you wish—e.g., as openings for meditation or prayer, as prompts for journaling or poetry-writing, as sparks for drawing or painting, as catalysts for change-making . . . You may also ignore my questions altogether to go off in other directions!
Do you have a “secret joy” or “sweet dream” that helps to sustain you?
Whatever your age, what joy do you find “living in a body”?
Allow yourself a bit time to take joy in daydreaming about “a world haunted by happiness.” (There is creative power in our dreaming.) What does that world look like?

Let’s close this Deep Dive with a time of voluntary sharing. (It’s fine just to listen!) Come and reflect with other Rafters on “Honeymoon with Big Joy.” Registration is required for this celebration.
I read the poem "RAPTURE" and remembered some thoughts I was having. It wasn't about joy, but was along similar lines. So, I'll share it here.
Waking.
Eyes fluttering, opening
thinking of how
harshly I’ve judged.
Merciless and cruel
like a bystander
with no knowledge of the
heart beating within.
Given one chance, one life
one body to grow in,
to experience life
in this unique way.
Embrace, envelop
and reconnect.
This venerable carcass,
this anatomical marvel,
this sack of skin and bones
has seen its share
of sickness and health,
joy and grief.
Find it all here and now.
Be present with the metamorphosis
And allow what is.
Replace judgement with jubilation.
Smiling.
Waking.
