Do you enjoy writing fiction? (It doesn’t matter what kind you write, or for what purpose, or how much experience you have.)
Do you also have a natural curiosity about the writing of others? A desire to support them, and to be supported by them?
Now for the big question: Would you like a dedicated fiction-writing group on The Raft?
If enough Rafters say “yes,” I’ll create it. Our fellow Rafter Ferwa Jaffery has offered to convene and host the gatherings.
Here’s what we’re thinking about the group at the moment:
The group would likely meet in a monthly Zoom.
Members would present extracts of their own writing.
Equally important, members would engage with the work of others by practicing respectful curiosity and sharing personal impressions.
This would not be a traditional writer’s group, focused primarily on “feedback” and “critique.” Nor would it have classroom-style teaching of techniques. (There are plenty of such groups and resources around.) Instead, we would intend this as a democratic, shared group, based on mutual respect and curiosity. Participants would find support, insight, and growth during the creation and refinement of their stories.
The group would develop over time to meet the unique needs of its participants. But, to begin, it would be based broadly on the guiding principles proposed by Pat Schneider in Writing Alone and with Others. Here are her five “essential affirmations”:
Everyone has a strong, unique voice.
Everyone is born with creative genius.
Writing as an art form belongs to all people, regardless of economic class or educational level.
The teaching of craft can be done without damage to a writer’s original voice or artistic self-esteem.
A writer is someone who writes.
Interested? Even just a wee bit?
The next steps we take, if any, will depend on the results of this poll. Stay tuned!
I’m in Singapore and am 13 hours ahead of Eastern Time. I’m not sure how that will work out but I’m happy to join any time in the day and up to 9 o’clock in the evening my time. Appreciate your accommodating me Phyllis but I’d understand if you cannot. Many thanks
I'd participate if the time is right. The time difference often means I'm in bed when the sessions are on!
