Dig it!
When navigating a river under your own steam, you often have to “dig” with your paddle—plunge your blade deeper into the current, where the water’s flow is stronger than on the surface, and apply a stronger stroke.
Why?
To find more power. To help yourself move. To get unstuck, or to escape a tough place. To make a hard turn. Even to make a hard but necessary stop!
Announcing “The Dig”!
Starting in September, I invite you to “dig” deeper into the current of your own creativity as a writer and benefit from its flow.
“But I’m not a writer!” If that’s what just went through your mind, think again! As my dear old poet-friend Pat Schneider used to say again and again, with emphasis, “A writer is someone who writes!” (She stole that line, with reverence, from William Stafford, another of my favorite poets.)
You. Are. A. Writer.
Now, wouldn’t it be fun to explore your writing self a bit more?
If your answer to that is “Yes!” or even “Maybe . . .”, read on!
“The Dig” will encourage you to write from your true spot.
Once a month (usually the last Sunday), I’ll email you a writing prompt. You may respond to it in whatever form tickles your fancy.
a journal entry (or series)
a poem
a personal narrative
a short story
an essay
a theatrical piece
a song lyric
a joke
a letter
. . . the possibilities are endless.
Be playful with the prompt, or serious . . . or seriously playful. Practice old ways of writing, or try a fresh new approach. Write alone, or with a friend. Maybe even collaborate on a single piece, or write back-and-forth in dialogue!
Most of all, write for yourself. Write what you enjoy, even if it’s occasionally difficult. Write what’s true—in the soul sense.
